When Heather Miller's family gathers for the second annual Heather Miller Memorial Golf Tournament at Oglebay Park on July 30, she will be present in more than just their memories.
Heather was just 21 when she died as the result of an accident in 2008 in Wheeling. The tragedy of her death consumed her family, who managed in their grief to abide by Heather's wishes to be an organ donor. Her mother, Jody Miller of Triadelphia, recalls how she didn't even know her daughter had checked the box for organ donation on her driver's license until she was taken to the hospital following the accident.
Jody said while it was the hardest thing in the world to lose a child, she knows Heather did the right thing by thinking of others through organ donation.
Now, two years later, the Heather Miller golf tournament continues to fill up quickly - it is already sold out for this year. The money raised through the tournament is used to provide scholarship funds for a nursing student heading to college. Heather was weeks away from graduating with her nursing degree at West Virginia University when she died.
